About CP Planning

CP Planning is a non-profit urban planning organization practicing a human rights approach to community planning. Our mission is to align for public, non-profit, and private sector organizations within the land use development industry to invest in solutions that uphold the economic, social, and cultural rights of marginalized people to have access to good housing, good jobs, an adequate standard of living, and opportunities for cultural expression.

Senior Community Planner

Opportunity

Application due date: Accepted on rolling basis

Compensation:  $60,100 - $72,730   - commensurate with qualifications

Reports to: Programs Manager

Term:  Summer/Fall 2023 – Spring 2025, with potential to extend

The CP Planning team is looking to recruit a Senior Community Planner who is an organized team player ready to apply their passion for community to support affordable housing. The ideal candidate has experience in capacity development to support marginalized residents shape their neighbourhoods. Responsibilities of this role include the coordination of one or more of the below working groups for one or more of the cities supported by CP Planning: 


Anti-Displacement Solutions (ADS): to build and support tenant associations to ensure there is an informed and organized tenant network that the local community can connect with new affordable housing supply. 


Property Owner Engagement (POE): to build a community of support for property owners seeking to build affordable housing on their property and generate new affordable housing through the connections built.


Community Land Trust (CLT): to start up or continue processes to establish neighbourhood CLTs. 


The Senior Community Planner will play a leadership role to support the CP Planning team implement the Roadmap for Redevelopment Plans to Confront Systemic Racism (“Roadmap”). The Roadmap addresses the intersecting problems of systemic racism, tenant displacement, and low planning outputs of affordable housing. These problems are addressed through Inclusive Neighbourhood Planning Hubs supported by strategic planning, mentorship, and vertical integration between racialized communities experiencing displacement pressures and those with the assets, knowledge, and/or social capital to plan and develop affordable housing. 


The ideal candidate lives in Toronto, Peel, Hamilton, Kitchener-Waterloo, York, or adjacent municipality. This is a hybrid position, with the selected candidate expected to attend in-person meetings at the CP Planning office at 2575 Eglinton Ave W, Toronto*, as well as to attend in-person meetings or events as needed.
 

*The frequency of meetings at the CP Planning office is dependent on how far the candidate lives from Toronto.

Responsibilities

Coordination

  • Strategic planning and relationship building to generate and implement actions, allyships, and connections as needed to achieve project objectives
  • Design and facilitate discussions and planning sessions within the organization and with collaborators as to ensure clarity on roles and responsibilities of meeting participants 
  • Take initiative to address challenges and opportunities as to ensure progress is in line with project plan milestones and due dates
  • Coordinate with senior management to ensure consultants and fellow colleagues are aligned and on track with project requirements, timelines, and schedules
  • Develop and use understanding of the culture and power relationships between organizations as to ensure project tasks are implemented in a manner that is aligned with the needs, mission, and vision of organizational partners


Knowledge Sharing

  • Apply knowledge of land use planning processes to inform engagements with governments, developers, and other stakeholders
  • Guide research and analysis, and generate recommendations from findings as to guide approaches to implementing and adapting community development solutions
  • Prepare surveys, presentations, reports, and other materials to gather, communicate, or exchange information with diverse stakeholders


Leadership Development

  • Conduct community needs assessments and prepare strategies for generating and evaluating progress on the capacity and effectiveness of community leaders to contribute to the achievement of project objectives

Qualifications

Required

  • Experience with community capacity development in city-building and/or urban matters
  • Experience in project management, including the management of consultants and coordination of staff, assisting in reporting to clients and funders
  • Experience working in or studying urban studies, urban planning, sociology, community development, public policy, or affordable housing 
  • Exceptional organizational and time management skills
  • Demonstrated oral communication and interpersonal skills to convey information in a clear, concise manner, synthesizing information and presenting it in an easy-to-understand way
  • Creative thinking and proven systematic organizational skills to work independently without supervision, determine workload priorities to complete work in a timely manner, and identify and resolve problems
  • Demonstrated commitment to social justice, anti-racism, and anti-oppression via experience in community organizing or capacity building with racialized communities 
  • Be flexible to work remotely or in person, with some travel across cities as needed (i.e Ottawa, Hamilton, Peel) 


Desired

  • exceptional experience with community capacity development in city-building and/or urban matters
  • Exceptional experience in project management, including the management of consultants and coordination of staff, assisting in reporting to clients and funders
  • Strong understanding of municipal land use planning processes
  • Technical expertise in affordable housing development including development approvals and financing processes
  • Experience working or volunteering in tenant organizing, community organizing, CLT establishment, or related areas
