About CP Planning

CP Planning is a fast growing non-profit practicing a human rights approach to community planning. Through this approach, multi-sector and multi-disciplinary collaborations guide for land use planning reform that upholds the economic, social, and cultural rights of marginalized people to have access to good housing, good jobs, an adequate standard of living, and cultural expression.

Founded in 2017, CP Planning designs, implements, and advises on national, city-wide, and neighbourhood specific affordable housing strategies to protect and increase affordable housing supply.

Compensation and Commitment: up to 2.5 month contract, timeline based on speed of completing work

• GIS Only: $7,200 + any applicable taxes
• GIS and Story-telling: $14,500 + any applicable taxes

The CP Planning team is seeking a meticulous and dedicated professional to provide ongoing support in the role of Geospatial Mapping Specialist. 

GIS

The selected consultant will primarily focus on creating custom maps, performing complex spatial analysis, and maintaining spatial databases to aid our efforts in increasing social equity. The candidate should possess the ability to translate geospatial data into easily understandable maps and visual aids for a wide diversity of audiences, and conduct spatial analysis to generate data-driven insights that can guide decision-making processes. We are able to compensate the consultant $7,200  for providing GIS services.

Story-telling

While GIS mapping is the primary service needed from the consultant, we are open to the consultant also assisting in advancing in key story-telling matters. In particular, this is to collect, document, and effectively communicate (through written and visual means) the stories of displacement of racialized communities in Ottawa, Peel, Hamilton, Kitchener-Waterloo, and Toronto. We are able to compensate the consultant an additional $7,300 for providing story-telling services.

Location

This role is primarily remote, though there may be in person meetings as needed. Preference to candidates living in Ottawa, Toronto, York Region, or Peel Region.

Data Collection and Analysis

• Collaborate with clients, partner organizations, and other stakeholders to identify necessary geospatial and historical data 
• Acquire, process, and analyze Census data, open data, and other relevant data sources  
• Perform spatial analysis to generate insights that can inform strategy and drive decision-making.  
• Prepare and present geospatial data analysis reports for a wide variety of audiences  
• Maintain and manage geospatial databases, ensuring data integrity and accessibility. 

Geospatial Content Production

•  Create custom maps and other geospatial visual aids that effectively convey project data and information. 
• Prepare geospatial visualizations, presentations, and other materials to disseminate project information or promote engagement in project activities 
• Work in tandem with the team to ensure that produced maps and other geospatial materials meet the required standards and are easily understandable for diverse audiences. 
• Coordinate with the Communications team to ensure alignment of geospatial content with overall communication strategy and objectives 

Required

• Minimum 1 year of experience in geospatial data analysis, cartography, database management and related coordination 
• Proficiency in geospatial software including ArcGIS, Beyond2020, and other relevant tools 
• Access to ArcGIS on own computer
• Proficiency in accessing and cleaning census data, open data, and other related data sources 
• Ability to effectively convey key project and organizational messages in maps, reports, and visuals that align with the organization’s mission 
• Excellent communication skills and ability to collaborate effectively with both technical and non-technical team members.  
• Analytical thinking and proven systematic organizational skills to work independently without supervision, determine workload priorities to complete work in a timely manner, and identify and resolve problems 
• Be flexible to work remotely 

Desirable

• Familiarity with urban planning, city building, and affordable housing topics
• Ongoing or completed college or university education on geospatial mapping with ArcGIS 
• Proficiency in Illustrator, for the purpose of adapting mapping data from ArcGIS into easy to read illustrations
• Experience in story-telling, anthropology, sociology, or related fields with an emphasis on the experiences of racialized communities
• Demonstrated commitment to social justice, anti-racism, and anti-oppression via experience in community organizing or capacity building with racialized communities
