About CP Planning

CP Planning is a fast growing non-profit practicing a human rights approach to community planning. Through this approach, multi-sector and multi-disciplinary collaborations guide for land use planning reform that upholds the economic, social, and cultural rights of marginalized people to have access to good housing, good jobs, an adequate standard of living, and cultural expression.


Founded in 2017, CP Planning designs, implements, and advises on national, city-wide, and neighbourhood specific affordable housing strategies to protect and increase affordable housing supply.

Communications Specialist

Commitment: 10 - 20 hrs / week negotiable, 14-month contract with opportunity to renew

The CP Planning team is seeking an organized and detail oriented creative contractor who will provide ongoing support in the role of Communications Specialist. The selected Communications Specialist has experience designing, managing, and tracking the success of communications for non-profits dedicated to increasing social equity. This includes ensuring that day-to-day and strategic communications materials apply a consistent design standard, key project messages are clearly communicated, and communication tools are easy to use and accessible for a wide diversity of audiences. 


Location

This role is entirely remote.

Responsibilities

Coordination

  • Collaborate with clients, partner organizations, and other stakeholders to develop and implement communications plans
  • Support in the management of arts based consultants (photographers, videographers), event planning consultants, and related communications consultants
  • Apply strategies to maximize knowledge mobilization and engagement of diverse audiences
  • Help to coordinate, plan, and implement events for clients, partners, and other stakeholders
  • Coordinate and implement the CP Planning event and publication calendar and communications workflows 
  • Measure and report on public engagement with all communications materials using up to date data collection processes


Media Production

  • Prepare updates to the CP Planning website
  • Prepare social media content, posters, newsletters, and other material to disseminate project information or promote engagement in project activities. 
  • Support the drafting of long form communication materials
  • Copy-edit major presentations, reports, surveys, and other materials 
  • Liaison with key journalists and media outlets to prepare and execute public communication strategies 

Qualifications

Required

  • Minimum 2 years of experience with knowledge mobilization, communications design, and coordination 
  • Minimum 1 year of experience in the management of consultants and coordination of staff assisting in knowledge mobilization and design
  • Demonstrated excellent design eye; Experience in Canva, Illustrator, InDesign, Word, PowerPoint and other digital tools 
  • Knowledge of SEO/SEM processes and marketing software such as customer relationship management and content management systems
  • Comfortable learning or implementing skills to create website content on Godaddy, Wix, and/or Squarespace
  • Ability to effectively convey key project and organizational messages in communication plans, copy, and visuals that align with the organization’s brand and mission
  • Understanding of design justice principles, web and social media accessibility standards, and the digital application of AODA guidelines
  • Demonstrated commitment to social justice, anti-racism, and anti-oppression via experience in community organizing or capacity building with racialized communities
  • Creative thinking and proven systematic organizational skills to work independently without supervision, determine workload priorities to complete work in a timely manner, and identify and resolve problems
  • Be flexible to work remotely and intend in person in Toronto, Hamilton, or adjacent municipalities if needed


Desirable

  • 4 or more years of experience with knowledge mobilization, communications design, and coordination 
  • 3 or more years of experience in the management of consultants and coordination of staff assisting in knowledge mobilization and design
  • Fluency in French 
  • Familiarity with urban planning, city building, and or affordable housing topics
