Affordable Housing Strategist

About CP Planning

CP Planning is a fast growing non-profit practicing a human rights approach to community planning. Through this approach, multi-sector and multi-disciplinary collaborations guide for land use planning reform that upholds the economic, social, and cultural rights of marginalized people to have access to good housing, good jobs, an adequate standard of living, and cultural expression.


Founded in 2017, CP Planning designs, implements, and advises on national, city-wide, and neighbourhood specific affordable housing strategies to protect and increase affordable housing supply. Approaches included research,  project management and facilitation, community organizing.

Compensation: $69,000-$85,000

Commitment: 35 hours/week ,  2-year contract 


  

The CP Planning team is seeking an organized and adept self-starter who will bring critical thinking, thought leadership, and technical expertise to the role of Affordable Housing Strategist. The ideal candidate has experience in affordable housing development, strategic planning, and community development.  The Affordable Housing Strategist will work closely with the Project Steward and Project Manager for CP Planning’s project Roadmap for Redevelopment Plans to Confront Systemic Racism. 

 

The Roadmap is designed to increase the protection and production of affordable housing by increasing the economic inclusion of racialized people to be participants and leaders in the planning, development, and management of housing. The Affordable Housing Strategist will contribute technical knowledge, guide the preparation of research approaches, co-design and facilitate conversations to build consensus on the problems, solutions, and contributions needed achieve these outcomes. The Roadmap includes the co-development and implementation of a Right to Remain strategy to ensure racialized renters are not displaced from their homes due to property owners raising their rents or properties being redeveloped as to capitalize on public investment in major transit infrastructure (such as an LRT). By year 2, this project team will have scaled to support communities in Toronto, Peel, Hamilton, Kitchener-Waterloo, York, and Ottawa accomplish objectives of the Roadmap. 


The ideal candidate lives in Toronto, Peel, Hamilton, or Ottawa. This is a hybrid position, with the coordinator expected to attend in person meetings or events once in a while. 

Responsibilities

Strategy 

  • Co-design workshops, surveys, and informational interview campaigns and opportunities to engage and build consensus on strategies 
  • Draft map of the relationships CP Planning must have or facilitate to achieve project objectives 
  • Advise on research approaches 
  • Build partnerships and alignment with external organizations 
  • Keep up to date with key topics (i.e. inclusionary zoning, major investments in public transit, anti-racism in planning affordable housing) 
  • Lead the planning and submission of applications to build affordable housing 


Communications

  •  Coordinate with the Communications Manager to implement engagement strategies 
  • Facilitate workshops, dynamic conversations, and community building conversations 
  • Draft and communicate synthesized information, potential, and proposed actions emerging from research and community feedback 
  • Advise on and contribute material for the Roadmap Bi-annual, Annual report, presentations, reports, technical briefs, and other materials  
  • Contribute technical knowledge of affordable housing development to the design & coordination of trainings and seminars for resident education and other activities as needed 
  • Represent CP Planning and speak about CP Planning’s projects at public meetings, community engagements, and other events  

Qualifications

Essential

  • Undergraduate/Masters degree in public policy, urban planning, business, or related field 
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in the fields of urban planning, affordable housing, public policy or related field 
  • Technical expertise in affordable housing development including development approvals and financing processes 
  • Demonstrated commitment to social justice, anti-racism, and anti-oppression via experience in community organizing or capacity building with racialized communities 
  • Effective communication skills and project management 
  • Be flexible to work remotely or in person, as needed 


Desirable

  •  Experience with public speaking
